Bears QB Justin Fields day-to-day with shoulder injury

Bears QB Justin Fields shed more light on his injury Wednesday, telling the media it was a "separated shoulder with a partially torn ligament, basically an AC joint.”

After Sunday's 27-24 loss to Atlanta, Fields left the field on a cart while clutching his left shoulder.

During his weekly media availability, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus categorized Fields’ status as day-to-day, adding: "If he’s ready to play, he’s going to play," via the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

Fields said if a game were held Wednesday, he would not play. The Bears play at the Jets on Sunday.

Fields’ backup is eight-year NFL veteran Trevor Siemian. The former successor to Peyton Manning in Denver will get the start if Fields can't go. Per Aaron Leming of SB Nation, Fields said he would not play Sunday if it affects his availability for games later in the season.

With the Bears (3-8) and Fields making great strides in his first full season as starting QB, a cautious approach makes sense.

Fields has established himself as one of the NFL’s premier, young offensive talents. He has passed for 1,642 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 834 yards and seven touchdowns.

After the Jets benched Zach Wilson on Wednesday, it is possible that neither of the team’s first-round picks in the 2021 NFL Draft will play.
