After a week-one upset loss against Rutger’s strong Scarlet Knights, the Eagles were hoping to rebound to a 1-1 record in their under the lights away in Lane Stadium. It was clear from the get-go that the Eagles would have to fight for a win, but after a turnover on their first drive, it was clear that this game would be a demonstration of the Eagles’ offensive struggles. After falling 27-10 to Virginia Tech’s Hokies, Boston College Eagles head coach Jeff Hafley took to Zoom, where he answered questions from the press about the loss.

The first question of the eight-minute interview came from Dan Rubin, a content producer for Boston College’s “Eagles Unlimited.” Rubin asked Hafley about his observations regarding smaller details within the game that contributed to the loss, to which Hafley responded with some brutally honest statements about the team’s recent performance under his leadership.

“We started off the game with a turnover, and then I thought the defense did a good job making them take all those plays to get in the end zone, and I thought we could keep them to a field goal,” Hafley said. BC’s defense was one of the only things going for the team throughout the game, but the offense struggled to take advantage of the defense’s ability to slow down the Hokies. “We didn’t get our first first-down until the eighth drive of the game, and then we got it going a little bit, kicked a field goal…got a little bit of momentum.” BC’s offensive achieved little until the second quarter of the game. “We cut the game to a possession, and then we gave it right back to go down 14.”

“There’s a lot of little things. Were not playing good enough, obviously. Were not coaching good enough”

The Eagle’s offense struggled through the entire game, with just 150 offensive yards and a single touchdown by wide receiver Jaden Williams. Jurkovec went just 15 for 28 on completion and took five sacks for a total loss of 25 yards. This loss set Hafley back to an official losing record with BC at 12-13. Hafley finished his answer by describing the essential issue with Jurkovec’s offensive: “We need to score points, we have to find ways to score points…We have to move the ball and we have to score touchdowns.”
